Botnets of Bulls**t: Repair, The Internet of Things And The Lies Manufacturers Tell Us
Electronics manufacturers and their lobbyists often portray efforts to create a legal right to repair as a danger to the security of the Internet. Access to parts, schematics and diagnostic software will upset the careful balance of device security on the Internet of Things, they claim. But the security of connected devices is a shambles, absent any right to repair. And OEMs are largely to blame for that dire state of affairs. In this talk, Paul Roberts, founder of SecuRepairs.org, will review the security issues plaguing smart, connected devices as well as current threats and attacks targeting the Internet of Things. He will explore their root causes and make the case that manufacturers are miserably failing consumers in securing their devices and that a consumer right to repair will make the Internet safer, not more dangerous.
